How to pay less
- Sliding scale. Many therapists reduce fees based on income — often down to $60–$120. On DocSana, filter by sliding scale to find them.
- Superbills. Pay out of pocket, get an itemized receipt (superbill), and submit it to your insurer for out-of-network reimbursement. Many plans reimburse 50–80% after your deductible.
- University training clinics. UT Austin and other programs offer low-cost therapy with supervised graduate students — often $20–$60.
- Community centers. Integral Care and federally qualified health centers serve Austin regardless of ability to pay.
- Group therapy. Often half the cost of individual sessions — and the peer factor helps.
The insurance reality
Insurance covers therapy when it’s medically necessary — but “covered” still means copays ($20–$50 is common), deductibles, and session limits. Couples therapy is rarely covered when billed as such. And many excellent therapists don’t take insurance at all, because reimbursement rates and paperwork don’t work for small practices.
We don’t track which insurance each provider takes yet — we’re collecting that from providers as they claim their profiles. Until then: ask the provider directly before booking. It takes one email.
