EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) was developed for trauma, and it's one of the most effective treatments for PTSD. It uses bilateral stimulation — usually guided eye movements — while you recall a difficult memory, helping your brain file it away as "past" instead of "still happening."
How it works
After preparation and resourcing (building coping tools first), your therapist guides you through recalling a memory while following their fingers or alternating tones. Many people are surprised that they don't have to describe the trauma in detail.
What it's good for
- PTSD and trauma
- Childhood adversity
- Phobias
- Grief
- Anxiety rooted in past events
Conditions it helps with
Screening tools suggest — they don't diagnose. Only a licensed clinician can diagnose a mental health condition.
