Social interaction anxiety check (SIAS)

For each statement, select the option that best indicates the degree to which you feel the statement is characteristic or true of you.

This check uses the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) — 20 statements about meeting, talking with, and mixing with other people. Three statements are worded positively and are reverse-scored, exactly as in the original scale. Our 3-question Mini-SPIN is the quicker screen; the SIAS gives the fuller picture.

Common questions

What is the SIAS?

The SIAS — the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale — is a 20-statement test of anxiety about interacting with people: conversations, eye contact, mixing in groups, meeting people. Scores run 0 to 80.

Why are three statements scored backwards?

Statements 5, 9 and 11 are worded positively (“I find it easy to make friends my own age”), so agreeing with them means less anxiety. The original scale reverse-scores them, and so do we.

What score suggests social anxiety disorder?

In the validation research, 34 or higher identified people likely to have social anxiety disorder, and 43 or higher suggested it appears across many situations. A screening score isn’t a diagnosis — a clinician makes that call.

Who made the SIAS?

Dr. Richard P. Mattick and Dr. J. Christopher Clarke (1998), University of New South Wales.

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) was developed by Mattick & Clarke (1998).
